In this brief…
Percept were contracted by the Cancer Alliance to research the burden of disease for cancer in South Africa and this report investigates the expected burden over the next decade. The findings of the report are based on model forecasts of the incidence and cost of cancer to the South African health system from 2019 to 2030. The report highlights cancer as a major public health problem in South Africa: the incidence and total cost of cancer are both rapidly increasing and are expected to continue to do so. This highlights the need for rapid implementation of cancer prevention strategies to reduce the number of future cancer cases, and thereby reduce the burden on the health system, which can best be achieved by integrating cancer prevention strategies with other disease programmes.
